Zakat Distribution for Students Under Fī Sabīlillāh: An Analysis of Contemporary Fatwas and Practices in Malaysian Higher Education Institutions

Today, students in higher learning institutions are increasingly in need of financial assistance due to rising living costs and tuition fees. This study aims to explore the expanded interpretation of the fī sabīlillāh category, which includes students. It is shown from the evolution of fatwā and current practices of Malaysian zakat bodies that the pursuit of knowledge is now recognised as a form of jihād fī sabīlillāh (striving in the path of Allah). The study employs a qualitative approach through literature review and content analysis of fatwā documents, state zakat institution guidelines, and reports on zakat distribution in tertiary education institutions. The findings have indicated that the broadened interpretation of fī sabīlillāh by state fatwā bodies, allows students to be classified as zakat recipients based on the principles of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah and maṣlaḥah mursalah (public interest). Furthermore, zakat distribution to students has significantly enhanced their motivation, academic performance, and psychosocial well-being, hence serving as an instrument for human capital development and the strengthening of spiritual values.
